Were It Not For Grace
`
Time measured out my days, life carried me along
In my soul I yearned to follow God but knew I'd never be so strong
I looked hard at this world to learn how heaven could be gained
Just to end where I began; where human effort is all in vain
Were it not for grace, I can tell you where I'd be
Wandering down some pointless road to nowhere, with my salvation up to me
I know how that would go, the battles I would face
Forever running but losing the race
Were it not for grace
So here is all my praise, expressed with all my heart
Offered to the Friend who took my place and ran a course I could not even start
And when He saw in full just how much His love would cost
He still went the final mile between me and heaven so I would not be lost
Forever running but losing the race
Were it not for grace
These are the lyrics to a song called Were It Not For Grace. As we have been working on this piece in choir, singing it over and over again, I realize how absolutely true this is. But each time we sing it there is new meaning. These lyrics capture what Christ did for us. Without Him, forever running but losing the race. Those words especially create an image in my mind: a mass of people running toward a finish line; some old, some young, some trained runners, some not. But no matter what person is running the race, as long as they are running alone, they are losing. It is only when Christ comes along and they trust him to scoop them swiftly off their feet that they can win. Similarly, it doesn't matter who of us puts on the best show of our Christianity; the person who attends church all the time, prays more often than another, does more good deeds than many put together.. that doesn't matter. The core of all things good is Jesus Christ. It is when we trust Him, and He bestows his grace upon us, that we are in His care and he guides us along the path marked out for us. It is then when we will finish the race.
