Sticky Fingers and Why Questions

`
Three letters: V B C.
Three words: Vacation Bible Camp.

This is my absolute favourite time of year. There are a mere 18 days
until the kickoff of EBC's SonQuest Rainforest VBC 2010. Each year circa 200 children pack into the auditorium of Emmanuel Baptist Church each evening of the week for, arguably, the best five days of their summer (and mine).

From the time I was in kindergarten until the present day I have been involved in VBC. Kindergarten to grade eight I attended as a camper and for the last four years, going on five, I have fulfilled leadership roles. This year I am one of the leaders of the Jr. High group as well as leading the singing on stage at the start and close of each evening. These both present enormous opportunity. I have an opportunity for five evenings at the beginning of July to build into the lives of children with a Christ centered purpose. My goal, and the goal of all other leaders and staff of VBC, is to glorify God through Jesus' command in Matthew 19:14 - "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Children are so precious. Jesus holds them in high regard; he loves them. It is my responsibility to show Jesus' love to them in all that I do. EBC's senior pastor spoke this past Sunday from Matthew 18 on childlike faith. Children are dependent, bold, trusting, honest, vulnerable, having no pretensions. Most of the time, what you see is what you get. And it is for these reasons that the most crucial formative times in one's life is from the ages of 4-14. Children are the most likely to become dedicated followers of Christ. They are the most likely to relate themselves to God on a daily basis on "everyday" terms. They are often the most effective evangelists - they speak plainly and boldly about what they believe, having no inhibitions. Children are most attentive to the gospel. Though they may not rank high on society's list of important people, they should definitely rank near the top of the church's. Not only will I have the privilege of sharing my faith with many young people, but my faith will be strengthened by these young ones. It will be fun, challenging and a week where by God's grace more children will be brought nearer to the kingdom of our heavenly Father.

There's nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child.
